Storied Cubs of The Past - Brant Brown

You can't move forward unless you know where you've been. In honor of our new season, I have decided to review some of my most infamous Cubs players of all time. As usual, I will take my usual cynical view and  start this post with a joke of a Cub who tried to ruin a potential playoff run (mostly likely because he was being paid off by the Giants).

Gentlemen, this is....

BRANT BROWN

As the Cubs continued their march towards the playoffs of the 1998 season, a boner from California took it upon himself with 2 outs in the ninth to attempt to blow a playoff run. A routine fly ball was hit with the bases loaded by Milwaukee in 7 to 5 game. A lovely day at Wrigley, there may have been a bit of sun that may have restricted poor Brant's vision. However, this is WRIGLEY. Most of your games are played during the afternoon sun, and you are wearing sunglasses and or eye black to help you with that.

Poor Brant didn't stand a chance at this routine fly ball, and will now live in Cubs infamy forever. Luckily for the Cubs that season, they rode a strong offense (cough::SOSAroids::cough) and decent pitching staff (the uncanny abilities of Steve Trachsel anyone?) to beat the Giants in a one game playoff to take the NL Wild Card.

However, in typical Cubs style, they were then trounced in the Divisional Playoffs to a fantastic Atlanta Braves team.

Thanks Brant for your story, and for helping us hear one of Ron Santo's best play calls ever.

  2. Do you think Brant will be the topps card on the ticket for when the giants come to wrigley?
